Higher Mother Tongue

Primary 2 students who have demonstrated the ability and interest to develop a higher level of Chinese Language proficiency will be invited to take HMT in Primary 3. Parents of these students will be informed at the end of Primary 2.

Primary 4 students can choose to take up P5 Higher Mother Tongue at the end of Primary 4. HMT is for students who demonstrate an interest in the subject and the ability to use Mother Tongue at a higher level. These students will be taking 5 subjects in PSLE.

Assessment

For Weighted Assessment (WA) /End of Year exam (EYE) /Prelims / PSLE ( 4S1H )

1. Standard Mother Tongue Paper for WA and EYE
2. Higher Mother Tongue Paper for WA and EYE

Workload
During daily lessons:

• Have to do both Standard Chinese and Higher Chinese worksheets

• Have to write both Standard Chinese and Higher Chinese Compositions

Compulsory Thursday afternoon Lesson for HMT

Criteria to continue with HMT at P6 level

1. Students who opt for HMT at P5 can only withdraw at the end of the year.

The Primary 5 Higher Mother Tongue (P5 HMT) programme is designed as a year-long curriculum to ensure continuity and steady language development.

It is important for students to complete the programme for the full year so that they can benefit fully from the learning progression and planned activities. 

2. Criteria to continue taking HMT at P6 is to attain AL 4 for CL and Pass for HCL at P5 Year-end exam.
